The Right Tank Material: Polymers
Wednesday, September 6, 2017

Choosing the right material for your next tank could make the difference between a successful purchase and a failed endeavor.  While most tanks are constructed from stainless steel or carbon steel, there are circumstances under which other materials might serve better.

Polymer or plastic tanks are one of the least expensive tank materials available.  Typically used for water storage, they are often constructed with polyethylene.  Because polymer tanks are impervious to corrosion, they are a suitable choice for installations near water saltwater.  However, plastic tanks should always in be indoors or sheltered as they degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight.  While many manufacturers mix UVA or pigment to reduce the damage, degradation is unavoidable.

As with steel tanks, poly tanks are highly customizable.  You have your choice of size, shape, color, and accessories.   Unlike steel tanks, polymers are light and easy to move.  Unfortunately, this also means they can be easily damaged during installation or when buried.

When considering the material for your next tank, it’s important to consider all of the variables.  While polymers are less expensive, their durability and practicality depends upon the application and location.  The immediate cost savings of a plastic tank may not outweigh long term durability of a metal tank.   If you’re on the fence, give Buckeye Fabricating a call.  We can listen to your requirements and let you know if one of our custom stainless steel tanks is right for you.
